sorry donna for not posting for so long, but i got caught up in a ton of stuff. to name a few:
1) i'm still working (teaching those 7 kids...)
2) i'm volunteering sporadically at the Design Exchange (TD Centre, King + Bay). i decided to try out the Extern Program @ U of T back in March, where they give you a job shadowing placement. I asked for architecture and they gave me exhibitions - me and a friend spent a week there putting up an exhibition and taking another one down. most of the work consisted of typing up and printing out labels, trying to get everything level and lined up, and PEELING VINYL. if you've ever wondered how they get those letters on the walls of museums/art galleries, you should wonder more about how they get them off - by using your nails and scraping at the vinyl for long periods of time. why they haven't invented (or maybe the DX just never realized this) a spray of some sort that counteracts with the glue, i know not.
anyways, the point is that after that one week, i ended up volunteering to put up another exhibit last monday and tuesday. and then this sunday and monday, i spent 10 hours packing up the archetype exhibit with some Ryerson architecture students, moving all the stuff to Kortright Centre, and setting it all up again there. i'm supposed to get paid for it this time, but it was seriously painful work. thank god there were 2 guys with us, 'cuz there's no way i could have lifted all those boards and models. they were huge and heavy, and we didn't really have any equipment to deal with them. i had to build a box today out of foamcore with duct tape and a utility knife.
3) i'm pulling all-nighters for Toronto Night Market. the promotions team didn't sleep for the whole of last week. we spent weeks slaving away at the program book and we still had to push back the publishing date by about 2 weeks. the number of changes was...well...painful. i edited each article about 6 times through: that's including once after i received the submission, once after the design team sent it back and said it was too long, and twice after the layout was completed and spelling errors/typos started creeping in. in addition to toiling on the PB, i've been writing press releases (5 to date) and sending it out to a pretty good-sized media list. between the general meetings and team meetings, i haven't been able to sleep much at all.
we spent one saturday afternoon putting up the TNM banner (drive along Steeles, west of Warden and you'll see it) with next to no equipment. while waiting for somebody to go buy rope and nails so that we could try to hang the thing, we decided to hold up the banner and get the cars honking. we made lots of noise that day on steeles lol. the pics are wonderful.
then there were two volunteer days at Under the Banyan Tree: Centre for the Developmentally Disabled, the beneficiary for TNM this year. the kids were fun, but SO energetic - i was exhausted afterwards!
then we have to plan out Media Day (friday, june 30th) and work out how we're going to be handling the VIPs attending the TNM Opening Ceremony. apparently i need to walk them around the booths and keep up a conversation with them =S since i don't follow politics, i just KNOW i'm going to make the wrong comment to the wrong MP.
4) i'm working on The E3 Challenge 2006 - that business competition for high-school seniors and university freshmen. We just had our orientation on Sunday and we had a phenomenal number of participants (~30 compared to last year's ~20). the teams compete in 3 tasks and an overall winner is determined and awarded a scholarship. at the moment, we have no scholarship because nobody has bothered to push for sponsorship. that, and we've got no third task. i'm still in the middle of liaising with a PR guy in st. catherine's and a viral marketing expert in edmonton for the second task.
5) i'm taking AutoCAD classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights at seneca so that grad schools like me and architecture firms can even consider me. it's the most boring class on the planet as they really expect you to be slow...and not computer-literate. the good thing is that i really don't do anything but spend those 3 hours checking my e-mail and doing whatever exercises are recommended to me. no assignments, no grades, no exams, no nothing.
6) i'm taking spanish classes with Irena (remember her?!) at the spanish centre (yonge + bloor). it's fantastic! really fun picking up another language that's a lot like french, and i get to hang out with an abbey girl every week ^___^.
7) aside from all that, i'm busy reading as much as possible because it's my only opportunity to do so. i'm also horribly behind on putting together a portfolio, coming up with a schedule for next year, and getting grad school apps put together.
oh, and a funny story to tell you:
so saturday night, my dad was driving me home from a party @ midnight when this white dog ran out into the street. it didn't have an owner following it, and we nearly ran over it. so after we got home, i went back to the street where i saw it (it was only a few streets over from mine) to see if it was okay. it was still wandering up and down the road, so i went up to it and it responded pretty well to me. it had no collar or tags on it, and just kept on sitting in the driveway of a house. since it was pretty late, i couldn't ring the doorbell and see if it was their dog (the dog seemed to gravitate towards light more than anything) and i certainly couldn't leave it running around on the streets. so i tried to get it to walk with me, which it wouldn't do. i tried to pick it up and it was too heavy. so i called my parents to pick me and the dog up. we managed to get her into the minivan and took her home.
she's a very well-behaved, pure white llasa apso. seems to be fairly old seeing how calm and slow-moving she is. gets along well with my dog and eats...a lot. very good dog and very well taken care of. we're still looking for the owner - we've asked around the neighborhood, but no one seems to know whose dog it is.
on saturday, my aunt from Vancouver came over and we had dinner with her before i went to 2 parties. yes, two. tried to be fair and attend both instead of picking one =P
a lot of other stuff happened...too much to remember right now. if i come up with more, i'll write it up during AutoCAD lol. my teacher loves me...every time he walks by i'm reading posts, e-mailing or doing something else equally outside of classroom etiquette.
