monster blog to catch up for the past month and a bit.
went to a tso concert (strauss tone poem don quixote + brahms piano concerto) with my mom on dec. 3rd. spent the rest of the week sleeping 4-5 hours per day, trying to finish a project for monday, study for a test friday and do drawings for friday. luckily my prof had cancelled an in-class essay that was to be on friday too. she just didn't show up to class 2 days straight and then a rumour surfaced about her cancelling all classes until the end of term...i love how the english department is so organized about letting us know these things.
every minute that wasn't spent drafting or modelling like crazy was spent at the larry wayne richards gallery at al&d, putting together an exhibition for us 3rd year design students. figures that nobody else wanted to do it and it ended up being 2 girls, a drill, and a guy who showed up every now and then. here's what we did:
tuesday (10:00-4:00): found the tech guys, laid out all the shelving, put in the brackets, primed and painted the shelves, installed the shelves. i think we had at least 4 ppl working at a time that day. it was our biggest team.
wednesday (10:00-2:30): touched up the walls, filled in all the holes, dragged down 4 tables from the 5th floor, brought down the drawings.
thursday (10:00-2:00): taped up the drawings, discovered missing drawings and missing models, brought down all the models via THE STAIRS (4 trips up and down from the 5th floor), got really frustrated.
we progressed from optimism on the tuesday to temper tantrums by thursday when us two girls discovered that there was no way we could do any actual pinning up of drawings. NOTHING was mounted and the opening reception was sleighted for less than 24 hours. our good humour completely evaporated by the time some other people dropped by to see how it was going. we just left and let them handle it all so that we could get our projects done for friday. it was VERY frustrating not knowing which students had decided to take their work home and who didn't want their work up, etc. the numbers were just not working out.
i went home at 2:00, took a nap until 4:30, woke up and had a salad. then i worked on my drawings straight until 3:00 in the morning. at 3:00 i had to reformat a batch of project descriptions, print them out and cut them (plus fix as many grammatical errors that i could possibly find).
after a quick 4-hour nap, i woke up at 7:00 to finish up the drawings. i ran out of the house at 9:30 seeing how it was a snow storm that day. my house is on a slope and my mom had managed to get the car up the slope earlier that morning...she parked it at the top of the hill so we had to walk up to get it XD.
the test was uh...well, a ton of quick thinking on my part. it's a site and explain kinda thing...a bunch of passages from books we'd studied and you have to locate them and explain their importance. good thing i'd studied for it on tuesday 'cuz there was no way i had time to study for it thursday.
right after class, i ran down to al&d to find that this guy had waltzed in, discovered that we hadn't mounted anything, took a ladder and started randomly pinning things up. he messed up ALL OUR SPACING. i was soooo mad it was not funny. and THEN it turned out that we needed to remove the longest shelf we'd put up because it was blocking access to a computer that the graphics committee needed so that they could put in their powerpoint presentation. we handed them the drill and told them that if they wanted it up, they were going to have to do the shelves themselves because this was certainly NOT our problem. the keys for the computer were missing, as was the CD with the powerpoint presentation on it - the shelving was only coming off once they had those. anyways, i had to go to a review for those drawings so i just let all those ppl who hadn't DONE anything for the past 3 days finish up the pinning (which was horribly done, btw). by the time i got downstairs it was almost all pinned up already. hated the way it looked, but at least everything was done and we could have an opening night.
took pictures of it and cleaned up everything by 5:00. went to the library to change and got back by 6:00 for the opening. all and all, the work looked great...i'm still not pleased about the pinning, but that's the collective fault of i don't know how many people. anyways, that was my crazy friday. i got back home at 9:00 and had dinner after 29 hours of no food lol. the last time i'd eaten was that salad at 4:30 on thursday. i slept for 14 hours after that.
saturday night i went to a bcc concert @ george weston recital hall (toronto centre for performing arts). i hadn't gone to one ever as an audience member. linda recognized me while she was conducting the audience christmas carol ^___^. i recognized a few choristers, found a friend i hadn't seen in about 5 years, and loved the music. still sounds great =)
sunday a meeting i had got moved up earlier and i uh...kinda missed it >-< put up the christmas tree and got all scratched up doing so. then i went to an awards ceremony @ euromusic at 3:30 and got a medallion for finishing off my teacher's a.r. in june. the actual convocation's taking place @ george weston on jan. 29th. the kids who performed at the awards ceremony sounded great.
went out for dinner with suzanne and leena the friday after. we went to joe baldi's on front st. - it was REALLY good ^___^. then we walked off dinner on queen st. omg misdemeanour's dresses are to DIE FOR!! that store is officially my happy place. i could spend my life (and all my money) there! did some more shopping...ran into a couple of friends at roots...went to lush (my clothes still smell of it) and got introduced to a shampoo bar =S. i still find it a strange thing...shampoo in a bar?! walked down to richmond and then along king. it was kinda cool seeing the TD centre at night and the whole king and bay area too. 'twas fun ^___^
went to starbucks @ king + yonge and got home by 11:00.
sunday i went downtown to do some research @ robarts. i came out of there with 9 books, went over to indigo on bloor to do some shopping and got overwhelmed by the crowd. it was REALLY busy. walked all the way back south-west to al&d and helped take down the exhibition. it took us roughly an hour - us 2 girls and the prof. i'm starting to think that the only ppl who get things done are 2 girls..2 girls trying to work a drill, 2 girls climbing up and down ladders, tables, chairs, benches...we progressed from using a chair i found in the basement, to a super heavy bench, to a table we'd dragged down from the 5th floor and finally got to a ladder that the AV guy gave to us after watching us struggle with bulky furniture XD.
we took pictures of all the models crowded into the elevator hehe. it looks like a city. and then we took pictures of them all laid out in a grid on the 5th floor studio. i picked up my 3 models and i don't know how many sets of drawings. it's been one hell of a long week of reading, catching up on sleep, going out for lunches, updating my portfolio pictures, cleaning up my room and cleaning up my computer. i'm currently working through samuel barber's excursions. it's a really fun piece. i spent all of saturday watching the maltese falcon and sunset blvd - they're REALLY good. anybody for a film noire night?
now i've got to get through those 9 books i borrowed -_-*.
