i went to the ESU coffeehouse thursday nite after attending the vito acconci lecture. i had to rush to get there because the lecture ended later than i thought it would. i had to leave while people were asking questions.
when i got to the cat's eye, i think set-up was pretty much done. it was a matter of tweaking seating arrangements until you saw fit, which really amounted to nothing. anyways, they had really good food there - muffins, cakes, chips, brownies, butter tarts...it was one hell of a good dinner for me lol.
the performances ranged from reciting poetry that students had written for various publications, to a Shakespearian monologue, to musical performances from individuals and bands, to rants and short stories. there was some VERY good poetry performed, that i was really blown away by. it was very nice and relaxing, and a great way to meet some other english students and share strange stories about professors.
friday was a very long day.
just before studio, we had a curatorial meeting in the lobby @ al&d. us third year design students are getting the gallery space in december to exhibit some of our work, and a large number of us are volunteering our time to design and execute it. we divided up into groups (curatorial, technical/mounting, graphics, event) and i'm part of the group who gets to design it. we have to fit in 46 projects (drawings + model) into the space, which is fairly limiting. the meeting was umm...interesting...i hope we all reach a concensus on things more readily in the future or else we're going to be needing a LOT more meeting time. after studio, i went to the al&d library and did some reading. then i walked all the way from college to bloor for dinner. i know i'm an idiot, but the falafel @ the pita pit across the street from al&d is horrible, and i'm addicted to the falafel @ sarah's on bloor. so i walked.
i then proceeded to walk all the way from bloor down to queen street, taking pictures and notes along spadina for a project. the site looks completely different at night with all the lights in chinatown. i stopped hating my site. on my way down, there was a big hubbub involving fire engines and other loud, noisy emergency vehicles. i think there was a fire just east of spadina. when i walked past, i could see a fire engine with its ladder extended. anyways, when i reached queen street, i crossed the street to the east side and walked all the way back up spadina until i reached college.
then i walked all the way to the buttery (not too far south of bloor). so i've essentially traversed the campus (and then some) 3 times by now. got to the buttery and discovered that i should really go to the robarts map library. did that, checked my e-mail @ robarts, then tried to find study space in the reading room. no luck - it was positively crammed with people. so i decided to get down to al&d early, figuring there'd be seating somewhere so that i could do some decent studying. my feet were killing me by that time. 3.5" heels are no fun for doing that kind of serious walking. this was the 4th time i'd walked the length of campus.
when i got to al&d, it was like entering from a world of misery to a world of warmth and welcome. it was the BAASS (bachelor of arts in architectural studies society) open house, and i knew pretty much everyone who is on the executive running the event. so i got fed (they had drinks and food laid out for the open house) and i got to talk to people i hadn't seen for a while, and it was so nice to be welcomed and greeted after walking around all by myself anonymously in the dark, cold night.
went to the brent cordner (furniture design instructor) lecture, which had nothing to do with furniture design and concerned only collecting and collections - an essay that he's in the midst of writing for a museum. funny thing is that i was sitting next to him in the library just 4 hours earlier. he seemed more like an aging student than a prof...ah well...funny coincidences. anyways, afterwards, a bunch of us archies headed over to the supermarket (kensington market) for a social.
we had the whole back room to ourselves...it was pretty nice. too bad not that many people from the program showed up, but we had a fair number and proceeded to ranting about studio mwahahahaha - my fav activity.
