i meant to blog a while back, but one thing leads to another, and i never end up blogging.
well, last thursday (15th or something like that) i went with my mommy to the paradise cinema at bloor + ossington to watch "my architect: a son's journey" for extra credit in fah282 (fine arts history course for architecture). it's this tiny little theatre 2 blocks away from ossington station, it's a little dark and dingy, but the film was great nonetheless. i think almost 99% of the audience was made up of my classmates hehe.
the film is about nathaniel kahn, the son of the architect louis i. kahn, who is trying to find out who is father was. kahn (senior) had 3 families and died in Penn station rather mysteriously. the film interviewed some really famous architects (phillip johnson, frank gehry, i.m. pei to name a few) and looked at some of kahn's buildings (richardson medical building, salk institute, kimbell art museum, national assembly at dakha, trenton bath house, etc.). it also interviewed the two women who are still alive who were in his life. there were a couple of buildings i'd never seen before, and also, kahn had designed a musical barge that i never knew about lol.
overall, i would have wanted to see more of the architecture, but what was in the film was amazing. it's obvious that nathaniel kahn is a filmmaker and not an architect, and therefore didn't really seem to know what parts of the buildings to film. however, the beauty of kahn's works does stay with you and i found it very inspiring.
it was also VERY funny: there was an architect that was considered kahn's nemesis in philadelphia who was interviewed. he looks 90+ but remains so hot-headed about who was right, it's just hilarious. frank opinions from nathaniel kahn's aunts were also funny. and then there was that scene where he was in jerusalem at the wailing wall and he films this guy who's praying next to him and after a while, the guy realizes he's being filmed hehehehe.
it's a documentary and all, but works with a pretty diverse audience because of the universality of its themes. my mom liked it. and i definitely like it! ^__^
friday, i went w/ my mommy again to the theatres, but this time to see fahrenheit 9/11 at fairview. i found it funny, though still with the overshadowing american patriotism that gets me so ticked off. moore very deftly dismantled the aura of american politicians, and he also pulled off some witty gags.
saturday and sunday i spent studying like crazy for my midterm on monday (yesterday). i actually ended up DREAMING about slides. *sigh* i had to memorize 198 of them: architect, project name, location, date and significance. i didn't think my brain would be able to handle it (the most i'd memorized before was 61 slides), but it did.
monday was also the performance day for my group in english (shakespeare course). we got there at 12:00 to do one last rehearsal, and tried out some of the props hehehehe. the brother of one of our group members had stolen this HUGE moosehead beer plaque from a bar in kingston and brought it in. we wanted to project a background pic onto the screen, but we couldn't turn it on and thought it was locked, so they made me run to bug the av lady. she said it was unlocked, but we still couldn't open it, so i returned to bug her AGAIN. it turned out that there was a touch-screen that was on, and we didn't know it 'cuz we didn't try to touch it lol. *sigh* we're english students and not techies at all, it turns out.
so we got the pic posted up nicely from the laptop, and then sometime during the rehearsal, the laptop's screensaver comes on: it's bouncing cows lol. we were going to make sure that didn't happen in front of the class, but uh...it did hehehehe. it was sooo funny.
i think our actors were a bit nervous, i know i was, and i think our director was even more so. a couple of lines were cut or modified during our performance, and i needed to give out a line, but overall i think it worked out quite well. the class picked up on a lot of the details and that was awesome. i was really quite thrilled that they noticed all that stuff ^__^
well, time to get back to work. oooh guess what? i worked out my schedule for next year, and it's HORRIBLE! =) i'm going to be in school 5 days a week!
